As the battle waged on, it became more and more obvious that God was actively battling against Father to escape. Energy that he desperately needed to contain God. This led to even more energy drainage, because now he had to use the energy to rebuild himself. Slowly but surely, his energy reserves diminished to the point that he started to take damage. However, even though he seemed to be unaffected by all these attacks, they do require energy from him to block. Father deflected all these attacks without even lifting a finger, sometimes even retaliated. The military, the rebels, Edward, May, and even blinded Roy Mustang. After this, everybody started attacking him. This weakened Father's grip on God, but not enough for full release yet, although his control over his powers obviously weakened (See chapter 105, pages 32-33). However, Hohenheim managed to thwart this part of the plan by forcing the release of these souls right after they were taken. He already had the power of half the people of Xerxes, but his plan was to bolster this power by the souls of all the people of Amestris. While not explicitly stated, it's obvious that Father needs tremendous amount of energy to contain God. It's more accurate to say that he simply contained God within himself to control its power. This is going to be spoilerific, but scarcely more than the question itself, so I'm not putting all of it in spoiler tags. I think this is just fine, as it seems that the anime streamlined the ending a bit. Also, his arm breaking was probably a bit for comedic purposes too.I'm going to answer based on the manga, because I still have not seen the Brotherhood anime. Envy knocked him out before he was really able to try anything. When his arm broke, he was freaking out, and he had also lost a lot of blood, so I doubt he was thinking clearly. He never really got a chance to do this, though.Īs far as I can remember, the only time his arm was not working, yet completely intact and attached to his body, was right after the fight with the Slicer brothers when Envy and Lust showed up in the 5th Laboratory. why can't he make a circle between his functioning flesh arm and his non-functioning automail arm? When he uses both arms, though, he is able to make a (roughly) symmetrical circle, and perform a transmutation. If Edward tried to make a circle with one arm, he would have an awkward and asymmetrical circle. Though this symmetry isn't perfect, with the symbols being different in the circle on the left and Al's Blood Seal on the right having that slightly asymmetrical circle in the middle, for the most part, the circles are perfectly symmetrical, especially the borders and the "structure" within. While it's true that he could make a "circle" by putting his arm on his shoulder or other part of his body, this wouldn't serve as a true transmutation circle.Īlmost every transmutation circle we see in the series has a single common property: symmetry. That said, we can try to make an educated guess. He probably couldn't tell you why he needs both arms, he just knows that he does. He enters the Portal of Truth and then gleans some kind of knowledge about alchemy that allows him to do this. The mechanics of Edward's ability to transmute without a traditional circle are not that well defined. He can't make a perfect circle without his arm.
